While our first thoughts in any emergency are about lives, we must also think about, and plan for the recovery of our business operations. It is our organizations, large and small, from the local diner to government offices, the Main street retailer to our financial institutions, that provide the jobs and services which are the backbone of our lives, our economies, our communities. Just as we plan to limit the loss of life in an emergency, so too must we plan to limit the damage to the organizations that comprise our society.
Simply put, business continuity planning (BCP) is about minimizing damage and resuming core operations as quickly as possible after an emergency.
Emergency planning addresses life safety issues. Once you have an emergency plan in place, it is time to address the issues of protecting your business operations. The statistics are concerning; 47% of businesses which experience a fire or major theft are out of business within two years; 44% of companies which lose records in a disaster never resume business; 93% of companies that experience a significant data loss are out of business within five years; and perhaps most concerning of all: Most businesses do not have an emergency or continuity plan.
Business continuity planning can be a lengthy, expensive and intimidating process. It is not uncommon for consultants to work on site for months to complete a full-fledged business continuity plan for a moderate sized organization. CEMA does perform these services and we would be happy to discuss such a project with you. Many of our clients however, have asked whether there is a more affordable alternative?
The CEMA Business Continuity Plan Template is not a substitute for a full business continuity project. But, if time or resources prevent you from undertaking the larger project, the CEMA Business Continuity Plan Template is a tool that will deliver measurable results and act as a worthwhile first step for future, more robust planning efforts.
The CEMA Business Continuity Plan is an interactive template. In a step-by-step process the template guides the user through the concepts and actions necessary for building a simple but effective business continuity plan for your organization.
